Annual Youth Canoe Trip 2023: A Success Story!

Annual Youth Canoe Trip 2023: A Success Story!
Aug 14, 2023

Over the course of two days, two groups of youth paddled a 25 kilometer section of the Nechako River with the goal of connecting with the land, water, themselves, and community. Each day was opened with a beautiful welcome and opening from Saik'uz First Nation Elder and Councillor, Rodney Teed and drumming from Nak'azdli Whut'en Councillor Mark Barfoot. Youth participants were welcomed from across the watershed to participate in this free event where youth learned about the watershed from the perspectives of Elders, knowledge holders, First Nations, researchers, land holders, and community members. On August 12th, a community barbeque was held at Riverside Park in Vanderhoof to celebrate the accomplishments of the youth participates and gather to share about the importance of protecting the Nechako Watershed. Funding support for the youth canoe trip and barbeque came from Four Rivers Cooperative, Integris Credit Union, Koh Learning in our Watersheds (a UNBC & SD91 project), Nakazdli Whut'en First Nation, and the Nechako Environment and Water Stewardship Society. The Nechako Watershed Roundtable would like to extend a huge thank you to all those who supported this canoe trip and helped to make it a success.
