Whats Happening
The Lakes Monitoring Working Group developed a Large Lakes Monitoring Strategy (LLMS) for the Nechako Watershed. The strategy, bibliography, and map of the project area are below. The strategy is a living document and will be revised as funding is realized and implementation begins.
The LLMS development was made possible through the Real Estate Foundation of BC, Carrier-Sekani Tribal Council, Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako, Takla Nation, UNBC/IWRG, Ministry of Forests, and Fisheries and Oceans Canada.
The information gained by a comprehensive lake monitoring program will be used to protect and later improve lake health and ecosystem services that First Nations and communities rely on. The results will assist and support decision making for nutrient management strategies in the watershed and will help resolve community specific issues including invasive species transfer between lakes in the Nechako, discolouration in fish, declining fish populations, increase in fish sea lice, and algae blooms.
The NWR is working with Living Lakes Canada to bring a robust lakes monitoring training program/opportunity to the watershed in 2026. This supports the implementation of the NWR’s Large Lakes Monitoring Strategy and will engage First Nations and residents through a facilitated education, outreach and training processes in lake communities. The training provided will build knowledge and capacity in water quality monitoring, lake stewardship and planning. More information coming soon!
